Detox Diets Work?

The body is constantly taking in substances that are toxic and bad for the organs through the daily meals. The kidneys are the ones responsible for detoxifying the body, or purifying the body of all the poison that accumulates, but they are not super detoxification machines. If too much toxins accumulate, it may affect the organs and cause them to malfunction…similar to taking in poison and drugs.

Many health-conscious people are now turning to a simple detox diet to cleanse the body of these toxins. You may not realise it, but when you are sick, you end up eating simple food and sometimes not even eating at all. This is already a form of detox diet, but one that is essential to purge the toxins from your body and make you well again. As you take a detox diet, you are also reducing the intake of carbohydrates and fats, so this helps to cut down weight.

One thing to take note is that detox diet is definitely not advised for long term, because your body still needs nutrients and energy to function. Starvation or abstaining from proper meals only leads to more toxins been produced in the form of protein digestion (the protein comes from your body itself!), harming your body in the process.

So, what kind of detox diet can you take? The simplest one, as mentioned above, is just abstaining from food for a day (and you must remember to eat in the evening to supplement the nutrients and energy for your body!). This is similar to fasting, so it is attainable, if you have a strong mind.

The other way is to drink vegetable juice or having a simple meal of salad or vegetables. These help to supplement the body with nutrients while not contributing to unnecessary carbohydrate intake. If you find eating vegetables or salad tough, just grind them into juice and drink it, since it is much easier to drink juice.

Cleansing for the Colon Digestive System

This week Gareth Edwards, our Alkaline Diet Expert, Dr Young trained blood analyst and highly qualified nutritionist writes about the numerous health benefits of doing a regular cleanse and how cleansing our colon and digestive system can be a great way to accelerate our body’s move towards alkalinity.
If you often think about giving your body a great boost by doing a detox and cleanse of your digestive system, but do not know where to start, then make sure to read Gareth’s cleansing guide.

I remember a friend once telling me that when she had completed a cleansing fast, the first thing she did was to eat a whole box of chocolates. A cleanse or short period of de-tox can be a great way to accelerate your body’s move towards alkalinity. You need to ensure that it provides a solid platform for consistent change that you can sustain.

I actually perform a “mini cleanse” every morning. Starting the day with a glass of water with a scoop of pHour salts in it, sets me off on an alkaline path and (to be direct) aids elimination. Your liver is working hard to de-toxify your body through the night, so helping it with an alkaline start to the day is advisable. A salad or a green juice for breakfast is a great way to keep the ball rolling. You can follow that with powdered greens and pH drops if you feel yourself getting hungry during the morning.

Making a Shift:
Sometimes however, we may want to do something a bit more sustained than just a morning cleanse. If for example you were experiencing a health challenge, such as arthritis, bronchitis, digestive challenges or low energy a period where you “apply yourself to the task” may be what’s called for.
The starting points for this need to be what you eat, drink and a gentle exercise plan.
Five days where you eat mostly raw, low sugar vegetable foods with healthy oils, sprouted beans and seeds and high quality salt is likely to make a big difference to your overall wellbeing.
Drinking powdered greens and pH drops, dissolved in mineral, filtered or ionised water and / or green vegetable juices will help to support you in shedding stored acids and alkalising your body tissue and fluids. Avoiding animal protein, caffeine alcohol and sugar can take a bit of effort. Have the house stocked with plenty of fresh, ideally organic vegetables, some avocados and nuts and seeds to snack on. Empty your cupboards of chocolate, fruit juice and sugary breakfast cereals before you start. If it’s not there you won’t eat it!
Have lots of activities you really enjoy lined up, so that you fill your mind with thoughts other than ….. food (and drink)! Gentle, enjoyable, outdoor (grab some scarce, but essential autumn sunshine) exercise, is crucial to help eliminate any residual toxicity or acidity.
Making changes like this can affect your bowel habit and may mean you feel a bit under the weather. That’s ok. If you experience loose bowels, that’s a de-tox! If you get a little blocked up then you can use pHour salts or core cleanse to help move things along. If you run out of ideas of what to eat or drink then the Energise recipe book is a great source of inspiration.

Another Level:
If you are already eating and drinking this way on a consistent daily basis you might want to have a two or three day liquid cleanse. This means that you have (mainly green) vegetable juices, drink powdered greens and make some smoothies with broccoli, lettuce, cucmber, olive oil and soaked ground almonds. Remember to “eat” your smoothy. They still need digesting. Aim for a minimum of two to three litres of fluid a day. Maintain an intake of mineral salts while doing this. pHlavor spray and pHour salts are suitable, but pHour salts can promote loose bowels so should be taken in small doses initially.
You can use some of Energise’s detox products alongside this liquid cleanse. Clay can help draw acids out of your colon and body tissue. If you are going to the toilet regularly then a fibre supplement is not essential. Myco-detox formulas can be helpful, but remember your daily lifestyle and dietary choices will have a huge impact on the growth or decline of toxic life forms in your body.

Top tips:
Consult with a pH/nutritionally aware physician before starting if you are taking regular medication.Prepare your fridge and cupboards.See if you can find a partner to share the preparation and keep accountable with.Schedule a cleanse for a period where your social diary is less crowded, (unless all your friends are raw food, alkalisers!).Be sure to maintain your mineral levels when cleansing with pHlavor spray and pHour salts. Sea salt can also be used.Keep a balance. A bowl of salad in the middle of a liquid cleanse is OK!Have some foods and plans ready for when you finish your cleanse. Vegetable soup and some falafel would be better than a box of (organic, dark) chocolate!
Disclaimer: Not intended to diagnose any condition, please seek help of nutritionally aware physician if experiencing health challenges.

Detox - Alkaline Diet Recipe #90: Leafy Greens and Ginger Stir-Fry

This delicious stir-fry reflects my love for pumpkins and squashes of all colours and shapes. They are typical autumn vegetables and I always collect pumpkins to make nice outdoor autumn decorations.

Apart from that I also love to eat them and got very excited when I discovered a recipe which includes the unusual combination of healthy and alkalising squash and leafy greens.

For this stir-fry you can use different leafy greens such as cavalo nero, green cabbage, chard or spinach which are all packed with nutrients and are high in calcium, iron, dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K and folic acid to name a few.

Squashes are also alkalising and are a good source of vitamins A, C, K and E, antioxidants and lots of minerals including potassium, magnesium and iron. I hope you enjoy this delicious and highly alkalising stir-fry as much as I do!

P.S. Do not waste the squash seeds, as they are loaded with minerals. You can roast them in the oven and use them as a healthy snack or in salads.

Serves 2
Ingredients
½ a squash, seeds scooped out and cut into 1cm pieces (if you are using a squash with a thick skin then peel the skin first)
1 onion, finely sliced
1-2cm piece of ginger, peeled and chopped
2-3 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
A few handfuls of chopped leafy greens (spinach, cavalo nero, chard or green cabbage)
1 red or green chilli, finely chopped
2 tbsp rapeseed oil (or alternative cold-pressed oils suitable for stir-fries)
Fresh juice of ½ a lemon
Himalayan crystal salt or celtic sea salt
Freshly ground pepper
A dash of Braggs Liquid Aminos (healthy alternative to soy sauce)

Instructions
Heat the oil in a large frying pan or a Wok pan and gently fry the onion for a few minutes. Add the ginger, chilli and garlic. Cook for a minute or so, but be careful that the garlic does not get burnt as it gets bitter otherwise.
Add the squash and a pinch of salt. Gently fry until the squash is just tender.

Toss in your leafy greens and add in a bit of lemon juice. Add a dash of the Braggs Liquid Aminos and season with pepper to taste.
Enjoy!

What is the Most Alkaline Drink on Earth

The alkaline diet is not just about the foods we eat, but also the drinks we consume too! Alkaline drink is just as important as alkaline food. In fact, the downfall of many healthy lifestyle plans (and the alkaline diet is a lifestyle, not a diet despite the misleading title is the fact that many people focus so much on their food, that they forget the drinks and end up undoing all of their hard work by drinking fruit juice, cordial, diet soda, tea, coffee etc.
So I’ll reiterate – what you drink on the alkaline lifestyle is just as important as what you eat.
So…

There are a few contenders! And my advice, up-front, would be to incorporate all of them into your lifestyle!

Alkaline, Ionized Water
First up is the alkaline, ionized water that I’ve been blogging on lately. This water is fantastic. Ionized water is highly alkaline, antioxidant rich, super-hydrating and filtered. When you use an ionizer you can set the pH of the water at the perfect pH 9.5 and alkalise your system all day every day! It’s great, you get alkaline, ionized water on tap! There is heaps I can say about alkaline, ionized water, but I’ve blogged a lot of this already recently and here are some of the best bits:

Why Alkaline Water is So Beneficial
The Ultimate Comparison of Alkaline Waters
How Alkaline Water Contains Antioxidants & is More Hydrating

Green Drinks (powdered)
Green powders/green drinks are a combination of powdered alkaline vegetables, sprouts, alkaline fruits and other ingredients. They contain ingredients such as wheatgrass, barley grass, spinach, broccoli, celery, cucumber, kale, avocado and more! You use these powders by simply adding a teaspoon (around 3g) to approximately 500mls of water, mix it up and drink it!
It’s as simple as that!

They are a great way to ensure that you’re getting your baseline of alkaline nutrition every day, and I personally drink about 2-3 litres of greens every day. And believe me, I know it when I don’t do this. I can definitely feel the difference.

Green Drinks (fresh juice)
Drinking a fresh green vegetable juice every day will change your life. If you don’t own a juicer – get one! I love to make fresh vegetable juices and I have one pretty much every morning before I leave the house and it leaves me feeling totally energised and vibrant. It is really easy to do, you just have to juice anything and everything that is green in your fridge!

Heh – it’s a combination! My favourite, most alkaline drink is a fresh green vegetable juice, diluted down with alkaline, ionized water and with a scoop of green drink added!
When I have this in the morning, I know my day is going to be a winner!
Stay hydrated, and alkaline

There are many ways to access information about body detox - magazines, TV programmes, newspapers etc. There is so much information about it i nthe media - it is really difficult to sort out what we should do. Which method is the best? What will you need and how do you prepare? For every question there are literally thousands of answers.

In reality, i think body cleanse is actually very simple. Our body has the ability is detox itself naturally, like when we sweat, urinate - it is a constant process within us. All you need to do is learn how to help your body be more efficient at that it is already doing!

Just like using our Kiseiki detox foot patch, it is actually a natural way for detox suction. By using the detox formula well packed in the detox patch, our body will works together in a natural way to let the detox patch suck out the "waste water" from our lympatic system, thus our body achieve a greater balance in health. (Check here for more detail)Basically what you need to do is to keep the demands on your digestive system to a minimum - eat only easy-to-digest foods like whole fruits and vegetables. Protein like meat, eggs, nuts, dairy, and legume (beans) take a lot of work for your body to digest, which means they make more demands on your organs. Fats are also hard for your body to proccess. All whole fruits and vegetables are great for body detox, so stock up on your favourites. Eat until you are full but do not further stress your system by overeating.

The second thing is drink lots of water. This will ensure your organs are properly hydrated and working at their best capacity. Filtered tap water is fine, most filters sufficiently remove toxins from your water.

Technically for an effective cleansing you should avoid stimulants like nikotine, caffeine and alcohol. Even if you stick to the fruits and veggie diet and keep your cigarettes, coffee, and alcohol, your will reap substantial detox benefits.

How to Detoxify Your Body for Successful Fat Loss!

There may be a very surprising reason why it is so hard for you to lose weight - toxins that are stored in the body.

When you lose weight, fat cells in your body are metabolized. This simply means that they are broken down. When this happens, any toxins that are stored in your fat cells are released into the body. Since this is the case, whenever you lose a lot of weight, you will release a large amount of toxins into your blood stream.

There are many ways that toxins are introduced into the body. They are found in air pollution, pesticides, impurities in our water, etc.

There are many ways that toxins affect your body.

1. They can cause damage to the mitochondria that are found in your body. Mitochondria are responsible for producing energy in your cells. They act as a powerhouse on a cellular level. They also convert fat into energy when they are located in the liver and muscle tissue.

2. Toxins can also reduce thyroid hormone levels. These hormones contribute to your basic metabolic rate. They are especially involved with carbohydrate and fat metabolism.

3. Another side effect of these toxins is that they block the effects of the hormone called leptin. This is the hormone that sends signals to your body that you are full. Without this hormone working properly, you might think that you are hungry even when you are not hungry. This will cause you to overeat and gain weight.

Just by burning off your excess fat, you can contribute to this problem. When the fat cells are metabolized by your body, the toxins are released into your blood stream and this will cause your metabolism to slow down. This will make it even harder for you to lose weight. You will try to limit your calorie intake, which will only slow your metabolism down even more. Thus, you begin a vicious cycle of trying to fight your own metabolism in order to lose weight.
